Possums and Weweia

Waipu School had a beautiful day for trapping on the last week of term 3. Apparently, the weweia thought so too and we got to see a pair together and each one came really close to us, which was very exciting. Steve told us that when the babies are born they ride on the adults back. We are really hoping to get to see some babies soon!

We didn’t catch any rats, which we were actually happy about because it means we have helped get rid of pests! We did catch a possum though and were really excited!

Steve was telling us that Maori navigators used birds to help them find land. If they spotted a bird without webbed feet, it would mean that land was near! We are loving being part of this project and learning how about the environment and how to help look after it.

  1. Well done Waipu! So lucky you got to see the Weweia and that you set up the possum traps! We have been getting lots of hits on these.
