Last check before summer holidays

What a year it has been! This project has been such an amazing collaboration between so many awesome people and I am very grateful to have been a part of it. Seeing the students’ engagement and enthusiasm for protecting our environment has been outstanding.

To date we have caught 89 pests – 68 mice/ rats, 16 possums, 1 weasel and 2 feral cats.

The Weweia are currently being shy and we have yet to see them with any chicks, but we are hopeful.

On the last check Steve had noted that several of the traps appeared to have been interfered with – tipped over on their sides or rolled several metres from their original site.

We caught another cat in one of our DOC200’s and although the cat activity has increased of late and we are often finding less of our kills left in the actual traps (after being dragged away by this larger predator), we think it unlikely that this is the reason for the traps being moved. It may unfortunately be humans at play here and hopefully will not be a regular occurrence.
