OTP trip 2

This was Te Ara Kahika/ OTP’s 2nd solo trip to the dam this term. It included Piper, Carter, Jayden and Scott.

We caught 2 rats and a mouse. We set up a new trap at station 1 for possums. Scott drilled the possum box into a plank of wood to attach it to a tree. Steve had seen lots more possums and feral cats on the trail cams in this area, so this was a good move. We rubbed blue cinnamon paste onto the tree and inside the trap to attract the possums.

This was our weeks’ bird count, although we don’t think we are increasing the Weweia population yet, we think we are noticing more birds in general, particularly the Riroriro.

Way back in term 2 we spotted a dead possum, likely killed by a dog or cat. It has stayed in this exact spot and we have been to watch the decomposition process. This is the state of the skeleton now.
Carter attempted to camouflage into the bush.

This was one of our most successful trapping experiences this term during winter, so we think that the pests are starting to come back out.
